Buffalo’s Union Ship Canal

Buffalo New York

Landscape Architect: Trowbridge and Wolf Landscape Architects
Project Designer: Bret LeBleu

Part of a waterfront revitalization project, Buffalo’s Union Ship Canal is a node along a new 5 mile multi-use pedestrian and bike path. The path winds along the edge of Lake Erie, past monolithic and largely abandoned grain elevators that speak to Buffalo’s heyday as a nexus of shipping, when it received grains from the Midwest and transferred them to smaller ships on the Erie Canal, gateway to New York City.

The Ship Canal references the industrial history of the area with custom designed benches, decking and signage. Plantings consist of grasses, which recall the grain trade. Envisioned for active use, amenities include a fishing pier and a boat launch for kayaks.
